Yesterday I had the privilege of going out to dinner with a former student of mine who is now in college. He was telling me about a discussion he’d had with some of his friends on the pros and cons of getting body piercings.
Some people were all for it, and some people were very much against it. Apparently the strongest reason against getting piercings was this: “If you get your eyebrow pierced and then it gets infected, it will look like you have face herpes.”
“Wow. I’m so glad I’m 34,” I said.
“Yeah,” replied my friend (who is 19). “Because when you’re 34, you probably don’t use ‘herpes’ as any kind of measuring standard.

Well…you do realize that once we hit 30, we were immune to STDs and it became a non-issue. ::rolleyes:: Personally, I haven’t gone the route of getting my eyebrow or any other spot other than my ears because I think it makes people look silly. AND I am also able to picture myself at 90 with a barbell through my tongue and an eyebrow ring…it ain’t pretty.

I’m still amazed at how younger people will refer to STDs as if there is nothing wrong with the idea of having one. It’s so casual now to drop that into conversation.
As for the body piercings, all I ever managed to have done was the cartiledge of my ears. I could never bring myself to any other piercing.

Such a good point! One that unfortunately doesn’t dawn on 19 year olds 😛

Yeah, that always surprises me too.
